Lorenzo Gutierrez, Ph.D.
StarFishMedical
Site Director & Microfluidic Manager
Lorenzo has over 30 years’ product development experience in semiconductor, consumer electronics and medical devices. He supported Med Tech start-up companies developing platform technologies for invitro diagnostics (IVD) and point-of-care diagnostic devices. His work focused primarily on the overall system design, hardware engineering, integration and translation of assay workflow to consumable microfluidic chips. He is the Toronto Site Director at StarFish Medical (Canada) and at the same time, the microfluidic application and integration lead. As technical lead, he developed new techniques for translating assays to microfluidic chips, and integrating it to medical diagnostic platform. He designs and customized micro-fabrication methods, and incorporates optical and electrochemical sensors into microfluidic chips. He was heavily involved in the design and prototyping diagnostic devices for different target panels such as infectious diseases (COVID, HIV-AIDS), cancer, stroke, brain injuries, and heart diseases. Lorenzo did his doctoral studies at the University of Tokyo, Japan, and his post-doctoral at the University of Toronto, Canada in 2013.
