A panel of experts from companies will discuss the seemingly never-ending chip shortage that some believe could last well into 2024. In one example, after stockpiling chips and feeling it would survive, Toyota in August finally said it would succumb to shortages, affecting popular models. But display panels and products that use them are also affected. Worries have even extended to Earth materials used in chips, prompting a broader discussion about whether companies need to sign preferred customer deals with suppliers well in advance or take even more drastic steps. What is the role for governments around the globe in building up fabrication capability and how much should the private sector expect to rely on government or go it alone?
