Inertial measurement units (IMUs) are used for a variety of applications in everyday life. Some of the common applications are in cell phones, medical devices, autonomous vehicles, robots, drones, etc. IMUs are also used in harsh environments like oil exploration, shock tests during gunfire, munition launching and flight, etc. These IMUs face uncertain and extremely varying environments such as shock and vibration. These shocks and vibrations result in false output and degrade an IMU’s accuracy and robustness. There are several key parameters of an IMU that are analyzed while selecting it for a specific application. This presentation will focus on the parameters required for the extreme conditions and how to mitigate the impact of such conditions on IMUs during their use through techniques such as sensor fusion using Kalman filtering.
